Walking beam design - for heat treatment furnace

The moving and fixed beams of a walking beam furnace in which heat is applied from top and bottom consists of water cooled tubes. The lifting beams describe a circular motion, which is transmitted to them by transverse water cooled beams which project through the furnace side walls and are supported on the drive mechanism outside the furnace chamber. The sealing of the passage for the beam through the wall is effected by means of refractory sealing cylinders, the imaginary axis of which is identical with that of the circular motion of the relevent beam, which is passed through them. In the prefd. version the motion is produced by a cam mechanism to which the refractory cylinder is also attached. The design results in minimum cluttering up of furnace chamber thereby facilitating uniform heat transfer.
