Phenol mixtures contg m-dioxybenzene prepn - by reacting o-or p-chlorophenol with alkali hydroxide under an hydrous conditions

The mixtures are prepd. by reacting o- or p-chlorobenzene with alkali hydroxide under anhydrous conditions, with continuous removal of the water of condensation, at elevated temp., reaction with the solid, finely divided alkali hydroxide (e.g. KOH) which is suspended in an inert org. solvent (e.g. diphenylether) being effected at 110-250 degrees C; the reaction mixture being vigorously stirred and the water of condensation being removed by azeotrope distillation. Undesirable side reactions are avoided and high yields result. The m-dioxybenzene product is used in prodn. of dyes. antioxidants, phenolic resins.
