A molecular sieve for liquid and gaseous cpds., esp. for aromatic cpds. and hydrocarbons, consists of carbon with low residual contents of oxygen and hydrogen, and has slit-shaped pores, where the height of the slit is up to 6 angstroms. Such sieves are produced by heating polyphenylene oxides to 480-1000 degrees C, pref. 500-700 degrees C, opt. after a pre-treatment. The sieves are used to separate isomeric hydrocarbons and esp. for the sepn. of aromatics from hydrocarbon mixts.
