The surface of the batt proper, of mechanically rigid heavy fire clay, is transverse grooved, i.e. in the direction of the flames or the heat radiation, and support bars for the ware to be fired are inlet into the grooves at spacings corresp. to the size of the ware. The bars either extend over the full width or are a number of shorter sections. The underside of the batt is lined with heat insulation e.g. breeze wool or foamed fireclay. Uniform application of heat to the ceramic ware which thus sinters evenly.
