In a remote control system, settings and measurements are reported by an outstation to a central unit in a time multiplex mode. The various transducers are interrogated by a coding unit, which prefixed each output with its address and assembles it for transmission in a data block, with synchronising and start and stop signal. - The coding unit is controlled by reading sets of transducer addresses from a fixed programme store. This determines which transducer outputs are included in a data block and so caters for different reporting intervals, e.g. some in every block, others once per hour etc. If the central needs an immediate report on a measurement not yet due, it can send an instruction to the outstation to step its programme on to the appropriate set. The outstation may have alternative programmes for different reporting sequences and the central can also select which one shall be used. (DS)
