Polyethylene esp. fibrillated web or sheet material, is irradiated with high dose rate, esp. =104 rad/sec., in inert gas or in vacuo with radiation doses of 5 - 20, partic. 6 - 10, Mrad, and the treated in a heating zone, in inert gas or in vacuo, below the crystallite m.pt. pref. at 80 - 120 degrees C. Cross-linked, heat-stable material is produced, with raised heat- and solvent-stability but undiminished strength, and ageing properties. Tempering in heating zone pref. takes place in presence of monomer vapour or gas, partic. at room temp.
