1338962 Fuel cells with metallic fuel ST POWERCELL AB 4 Oct 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 46082/71 Heading H1B A fuel cell includes a magnetic electrode to which metallic fuel is supplied in the form of particles having ferromagnetic properties, the electrochemical reaction causing the particles to be consumed and lose these properties whereby the reaction products leave the electrode. The preferred material for the particles is iron, but alternatives are cobalt and nickel ; further, the particles may consist of a ferromagnetic core coated with zinc or aluminium functioning as fuel. In the embodiment shown a plurality of disc-shaped permanent magnet electrodes 1 are mounted on a rotating tube 9, the electrodes having a covering 1b of plastics material provided on its surface with a foil or grid 1c of nickel. Each cell consists of one electrode 1 and a pair of disc-shaped oxidant electrodes 2 enclosing a space 4 to which air is supplied through the tube 9, the oxidant paths being shown by thick dash lines in the Fig. The electrodes 2 also rotate with the tube 9 and are formed of a sintered mixture of silver and nickel and have a fine pored sintered nickel coating on their sides facing electrolyte compartments 3. The compartments 3 are sealed at their outer peripheries by double seals 12 of plastics material carried by a stationary housing 11 and which co-operate with seal rings 13 on the electrodes 1, 2. The electrolyte, e.g. KOH, is admitted to the compartments 3 through perforated pipes 14 and the metallic fuel in the form of iron particles is introduced into the electrolyte from a hopper 18. The reaction products leave the compartments 3 through tubes 16 and are removed from the electrolyte by a pump and filter unit 19. Connectors 21 serially connect the cells. In a modification the permanent magnet feature of electrodes 1 is replaced by electromagnets.
