Herbicidal alpha-naphthoxy-acetamides - from alpha-naphthoxyacetic acids via acid chlorides

Title cpds. of formula (I) : (where R1 is H or lower alkyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl, and R3 is lower alkyl or lower alkenyl; R3 being Me, Et or lower alkenyl when R1= R2=H) are prepd. by treating alpha=R1-alpha-naphthoxyacetic acid with a stoichiometric excess of COCl2 and/or SOCl2 in the presence of dimethylformamide or triethylamine HCl as catalyst, and reacting the resulting acid chloride with a stoichiometric excess of HNR2R3.
