Water-insol. monazo dyes for dyeing aromatic polyesters and acetate rayon shades fast to light, wetting and dry heat treatments, are free from sulphonic acid and carboxylic acid grps. and have the formula: (where W1 is H, Cl, Br, CN or acylamino of formula: -NHZ1; W2 is H, Cl, Br, Cn or NO2, providing that one of W1 and W2 is H; each Z and Z1 is acyl of formula: -COV or -SO2U, V being H, amino or lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, phenyl or phenoxy opt. carrying substituents and U being lower alkyl or phenyl opt. carrying substituents; Y is H, lower alkyl or alkoxy; R is lower alkyl or phenyl opt. carrying substits. or a radical: A-CO-O-A1-(X)n; A is 1-6C alkylene; n is 1 or 2; A1 is not 4C; X is CN, lower alkoxy, opt. substd. phenoxy, OH, lower alkoxycarbonyl, opt. substd. phenoxycarbonyl, carbonamido, opt. substd. carbonanilido, N-(lower alkyl)-carbonamido or N:N-di-(lower alkyl)carbonamido, amino, opt. substd. anilino, N-(lower alkyl)amino, N:N-di-(lower alkyl)-amino, lower alkylsulphonyl, opt. substd. phenylsulphonyl or a radical of formula Cl.CO-, Cl.COO- or Cl.CONH-, or Cl or Br).
