1321926 Gas burner; pilot gas burner; heating furnaces TOKYO GAS CO Ltd 3 June 1971 [10 July 1970 7 Nov 1970 26 Dec 1970] 18748/71 Headings F4B F4F and F4T A high velocity gas burner comprises a combustion chamber 1 having a narrower tapering exhaust nozzle 3 preferably terminating in a slot-shaped opening, an air flow equalizing plate 4 mounted in the chamber and having a large number of air passage holes 5 so as to mix combustion air delivered from an inlet 9 with fuel gas from an inlet 8 and pipe 6 and to retain the flames inside or around the plate, and a pilot burner 7 whereof the pilot plane is kept inside plate 4 to prevent overheating the burner body 2. The axis of the nozzle 3 may be orientated at right angles to the centre line of the burner as shown, coaxial therewith as shown in broken lines or at any other angle. The burner may be used in a heating furnace as shown in Fig. 2 with curved portions 10 and projections 11 provided on the inner walls thereof downstream of the exhaust nozzles of burners a 1 , a 2 , a 3 and a 4 so as to produce desired patterns of combustion gas flow. In the configuration shown the nozzles are disposed at right angles to the centre lines of the burners so as to produce longitudinal heating zones 13, 14 isolated by curtains of hot gas. In a second embodiment burners with the nozzles disposed along their centre lines are mounted on the roof of the furnace so as to produce transverse flow patterns. With a further embodiment applied to furnaces having car bottoms, the burners are arranged alternately to direct their combustion gases along grooves in the bed of the furnace to achieve uniform heating of the furnaces. In a still further application, conventional low velocity burners are arranged with combustion chambers and baffles so that part of their combustion products is directed upwardly and subsequently stirred by the combustion gases delivered from the high velocity burners.
