Active carbon is prepd. by heating vegetable material consisting of the residue obtained during the acid extraction of xylose-contg. vegetable material in the absence of air, and simultaneously or subsequently activating with a known activating agent. Gives high quality active carbon. The extraction residue is used economically, as this material was formeryl burned. The residue is derived from comminuted nut shells, esp. comminuted coconut shells, beech wood chips, or rice straw.
