Distn. is effected by circulation the soln. to be treated into a series of chambers maintained at progressively decreasing pressures; condensation of the vapour produced is caused by expansion in each chamber by exchange with a colder fluid circulating in counter-current through condenser tubes from one chamber to the next. The expansion chambers are arranged in a series of superimposed stages in an annular zone around a cluster of condenser tubes of a small diam., together with the long path of the soln. in the course of expansion, combine to give the maximum yield.
