An automobile bumper comprises rounded members 2SP1/SP at either end of the automobile movable by fluid pressure acting on pistons 17 to extend a flexible band 3 from drums 5 to form the bumper. The members may be retracted to the position shown for ease of parking. Extendable members 4 may be provided at the sides of the vehicle. The nose members 2SP1/SP may incorporate signal devices which measure the distance from the car ahead to provide a danger signal or to control the speed or brakes of the car.
