1,261,587. Aerials; radio direction-finders. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 21 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 26021/69. Headings H4A and H4D. The feeder(s) to the upper of two vertically displaced aerials, the lower one of which is a crossed-direction-finding aerial, are guided by a vertical frame surrounding the latter. In an embodiment the mast head 2 of a ship carries a V.H.F. direction-finding system including eight aerials 1 connected in parallel in pairs; a lower frequency direction-finding system includes pairs 3, 4 of ferrite rods and an auxiliary aerial of two frusto-conical or frusto-pyramidal linings disposed above and below the plane of the frames. A crossed frame with tubular frames 5, 6 guides the feeders to the V.H.F. directionfinder, the planes of the frames being aligned parallel to rods 3, 4. It is stated that directionfinding errors resulting from currents flowing in frames 5, 6 do not ensue. To reduce reduction in the sensitivity of the lower aerial system rings of ferrite 8 are arranged on frames 5, 6. The tubes of the latter are electrically connected to parts 9, 10. Frames 5, 6 may be utilized as a further direction-finder, coupling windings being on at least some of the ferrite rings, Fig. 2 (not shown). The invention may be applied to more than two vertically-spaced systems.
