A thread guide comprising a pivoted arm 19 (Fig. 2) and a member 18 having a shoulder portion 18-1, a notch 18-2 and an oblique portion 18-3, is pivoted from position 170 (Fig. 1) to position 17 to engage a strand passing to a package 6, disengaging the strand from traverse guide 15, and causing it to move axially along the package by virtue of the oblique portion. The strand thus moves to the notch 18-2, where it is aligned with a strand-catching groove in an empty mandrel 4 which is to be rotated to the winding position 3. (For Figures see next page)
