A spectrophotometer, having a mono-chromator system comprising a light source in the form of a luminous spot moving on a luminescent screen of a cathode ray tube, consists of a grating monochromator and a prismatic or filter monochromator, the entrance slit or slits of the prismatic or filter mono-chromator coinciding with the exit slit or slits of the grating monochromator, and the luminous spot being movable along one of several paths situated side-by-side, whereby through the exit slit of the prismatic or filter mono-chromator is transmitted a spectrum of an order of diffraction depending on the path of movement of the luminous spot. In one embodiment the luminous spot scans a plurality of paths 2, 3, 4, the light output being collimated by a concave mirror 5 on to a diffraction grating 6 from which it is reflected via mirror 5 to focus on an exit slit 7. The light from slit 7 passes on to a further concave mirror 11 which reflects the beam on to a prism 12 having a reflective backing. The mirror 11 reflects light from prism 12 and focuses it on a final exit slit 13. The paths 2, 3, 4, grating 6, slit 7, prism 12 and slit 13 all lie in one plane which is the focal plane of both mirrors 5 and 11. Thus it is an image of grating 6 which is focused on prism 12. For each path 2, 3, 4 the grating 6, prism 12 and slit 13 will pass light of a different wavelength, the slit 13 being so located as to blank off undesired harmonics. Path 2, 3, 4 is selected by a change in voltage at the tube. In an alternative embodiment the prismatic mono-chromator is replaced by a filter mono-chromator. This filter monochromator may comprise a plurality of optical filters disposed adjacent the exit slit of the monochromator, each filter covering a different segment of the slit and transmitting light of a different wavelength, light passing through the filters depending on the path of movement of the luminous spot. In a further alternative the grating monochromator may have several exit slits in front of each of which is disposed an optical filter.
