A light distributor for a photographic type composing apparatus having a revolvable character disc or cylinder 8 comprises a flash discharge tube light source 1, a reflective surface, e.g. a mirror 4 or prism (14), Fig. 3 (not shown), rotatable about an axis not normal to the surface by a stepping motor 5, and a plurality of light guides 6 each having a first end positioned to receive light from the source when the reflective surface is in a particular position and a second end 61 for location adjacent a line of characters on the disc or cylinder. A particular line of characters is thus selected for illumination by a single light source by adjusting the position of the reflective surface. The stepping motor may be rotatable both clockwise and anticlockwise for rapid mirror or prism positioning, the ends of the light guides being positioned, equally spaced, along the circumference of a circle centred on the axis of mirror or prism rotation.
