In apparatus for diluting bromine (or other antiseptic) and adding it to water flowing in a conduit 21, water is withdrawn at 4 from the main flow by a pump 5 and supplied to constant level tanks 7, 12 and to mixing vessel 2 which comprises a jet pump. The tank 7 supplies water at a rate controlled by a valve 3 to a bromine storage vessel 1, forming brominated water which passes through conduit 10 under pressure from the tank 7 assisted by the induction of the jet pump. The induction side of the jet pump is also connected by conduit 11 to tank 12 the water level in which regulates the reduction in pressure communicated to vessel 1. The highly diluted bromine solution from the mixing vessel 2 passes through conduit 14 and surge tank 15 back to the main flow. The valve 3 may be operated manually to vary the frequency and/ or period of operation, or by an electromechanical or electronic system in response to continuous measurement of the bromine content of the water to be treated.
