The measurement appears in digital form in register 1 and is gated by a control signal A into a register 5. Signal A also gates a fixed minimum value set up on switches 9 into a counter 7. Immediately after signal A, a second signal B causes oscillator 10 to start, the pulses stepping counter 7. The outputs of counter 7 and register 5 are compared at 13. If the value in register 5 is less than that preset in counter 7 it is too low to be taken into account and the comparator is arranged to enter a 0 into counter 11. If the measurement value is higher than the value in counter 7 it is converted into one of a hundred values by the comparator 13, divider 12 and counter 11. Counter 7 is incremented at the frequency of oscillator 10. At the same time counter 11 is incremented through divider 12, the division factor being such that a count of 100 in counter 11 embraces the whole of the measurement range which is being studied. When the counter 7 output equals the output of register 5 the comparator stops the oscillator 10, the count in counter 11 then being the number which identifies the category in which the measurement falls. If the counter 11 reaches a count of 99 without comparator 13 giving an output, an output v stops the oscillator so that count 99 represents any value above the fixed range, as 0 means any value below it. The value in counter 11 is used to add one to the corresponding storage position in ring store 15 by acting through gating circuit 14 as an addressing signal, the store 15 being cycled under the control of a 100- step counter 20 until the addressed position is found. The stored value is read out to register 16, incremented by one and returned to store 15. A counter 17 is preset to the number of measurements to be made. When this number is reached store 15 is disabled, the stored values are then read out via a digital to analogue converter 23 to provide video signals for a histogram display on a CRT 18.
