1282827 Recovering cerium values UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 19 Aug 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 39833/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Cerium compounds are separated from those of berkelium, alkali metal and alkaline earth metals, lanthanides and actinides, Fe, Zr, and Nb by liquid-liquid extraction of an aqueous solution adjusted to a nitric acid concentration of from 2-6 molar containing enough bromate to keep the Ce in the + 4 state, with an organic phase (e.g. xylene) containing a quaternary amine nitrate of formula R 4 NNO 3 where R 4 represents 4 alkyl substituents of 1-10 carbon atoms where the quaternary salt has a molecular weight not exceeding 450, and then selectively stripping the cerium from the organic phase with a stripping agent selected from distilled water, nitric acid, or hydrochloric acid.
