Heading C2C. #-(N-Acetyl)-L-ornithine is prepared by culturing a micro-organism capable of producing it and belonging to the genus Paracolobactrum in an aqueous medium under aerobic conditions, preferably at 25-40‹ C. and in the pH range 5À5-8À5. The preferred organisms are those requiring citrulline or arginine as well as at least one pyrimidine or precursors thereof for growth, and the #-(N-acetyl)-L-ornithine is normally recovered from the culture medium by an ion exchange resin treatment. Examples detail the use of P. coliforme A.T.C.C. 21031. Small amounts of L-ornithine are simultaneously produced.
