1387859 Vinylidene chloride CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 14 July 1972 [17 July 1971] 32995/72 Heading C2C Vinylidene chloride is prepared by reacting 1,1,2-trichloroethane with chlorine in a mole ratio of chlorine : chlorohydrocarbon of from 0À1 : 1 to 0À4 : 1 at a temperature of from 350‹ to 500‹ C. for from 10 to 50 seconds. The reaction is advantageously carried out in an empty tube in the absence of a catalyst. Symmetrical dichloroethylene and trichloroethylene, formed as by-products, may be returned to the reaction zone following a known chlorination or hydrochlorination stage.
