The stiffening element comprises a tube 7. The strip 5 is of rubber or plastics and adjacent strips are secured by covers 14 and by I- section members 8 with bolts 11 extending into the stiffening elements. Strip 3 is adhered in place, and sealing strip (20, Fig 3) of foam material may be provided. The sheets are transparent or opaque, curved or flexible, e.g. they may be of glass, wood, or plastics.
