For activation, separation, enrichment or measurement of concn. of a specific isotope in a mixt. esp. of U-235 in a mixt. of isotopes of U, the atoms are bombarded either with X-rays or with electrons, the control of the energy level of that excitation bombardment determining the way in which electron orbital transition or escape takes place. In the specific example of U-235, the electrons, used for bombardment have an energy of 17.2 keV. The phenomenon is alternatively entitled "process of inverse internal transformation" or "dynamic excitation of atomic nuclei by electron transition".
