1,075,444. Carding engines. G. ROBERTS. Jan. 1, 1965 [Oct. 30, 1964], No. 42762/63. Heading DIN. In order to provide a carding action less fierce than on conventional machines and which results in less fibre breakage and nep formation, card clothed rollers are rotated in opposite directions at different surface speeds with the angle of inclination of the clothing such that fibres carried by a first roller are pressed into the teeth of a second roller on the entering side of the zone of co-operation between them and drawn out of the teeth of the second roller back on to the teeth of the first roller at the leaving side of the zone. The surface speed of the second roller should be not less than 30% of that of the first roller and the preferred range of tooth angles lies between 55‹ and 75‹ to the tangent to the circle described by the points of the teeth. In one arrangement, Fig. 2 (Provisional), carding rollers 22-35 are arranged in two rows with zones of co-operation at w and clearing areas at c. A more compact arrangement, Fig. 3 (Provisional), has a central roller 50 with opening rollers 56, 57, 58, 60, 61 and fancy 59 around it, followed by a brush roller 62 to transfer the fibres to a similar arrangement of rollers. In this arrangement there is also a sequence of feed rollers 51, 52, 54, 55, the last of which acts as a brush or fancy and the intermediate pair 52, 54 co-operate in the manner of the invention. Similar feed roller sequences may be applied to otherwise conventional carding machines, Fig. 4 (Provisional) (not shown). A feed sequence employing Garnett wire clothing, Fig. 5 (Complete), (not shown) has an opening action between rollers (87) and (86) and between rollers (87) and (89).
