for sterile blocks, resistant to sudden temp. changes and useful for regenerative chambers and screens for glass-melting- and Siemens-Martin furnaces, are produced by using forsterite slag obtd. in carbothermal ferrochrome prepn., processed by breaking up and magnetic separation and contg. 3% Fe2O3, as raw material; shaping to blocks together with 1-50 (3-35)% sinter magnesia, with addn. of 2-6 (3-4)% standard b inders, drying and opt. f iring at 1460-1600 (1540) degrees C. Addn. of 2-30 (10-20)% Cr ore further improves sudden temp. change resistance of blocks.
