Alternating copolymers of butadiene or isoprene and acrylonitrile or an ,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester in which the diene units are substantially trans-1,4 are obtained by copolymerization in the presence of an organoaluminium halide or equivalent mixture of aluminium compounds as catalyst. The polymerization may be performed in bulk or in solution, suitably in a hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, or an ether. The stereoregularity of the copolymers is determined by NMR and IR spectra, and elementary analysis. In the examples, butadiene-acrylonitrile, isoprene-acrylonitrile, butadiene methyl or ethyl methacrylate and isoprene-methyl or ethyl methacrylate, alternating copolymers are obtained using (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al 2 Cl 3 , (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al 2 Br 3 , (i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 Al 2 Br 3 , (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl, C 2 H 5 .AlCl 2 , (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl/C 2 H 5 .AlCl 2 , and (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al/AlCl 3 as catalysts, and in Example 26 a butadiene-acrylonitrile alternating copolymer is cured.
