Thermostable polyamide-imide fibres, having good lustre are produced by (a) extrusion of an N-methylpyrrolidone soln. of a polymer comprising amide-imide units (A), of formula : amide units (B) of formula:- and opt. amide units (C) of formula: -NHAr1NHCOR-CO-(in which Ar1 = divalent, opt. substd. with a small quantity of (cyclo)aliphatic radical, aromatic radical; Ar2 = trivalent aromatic radical; R = divalent aromatic, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or arylaliphatic radical, and M = alkali or alkaline earth metal. Units (B) make up is not 3 wt.% of A + B + C. The soln. is extruded into an aqs. coagulating bath contg. 30-75wt.% of N-methylpyrrolidone. The coagulating fibres are drawn in air at a draw ratio of 1,5, washed to eliminate excess N-methylpyrrolidone, and dried by some conventional method.
