1340882 Toothed gearing CAM GEARS Ltd 7 Sept 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 44570/70 Heading F2Q A vehicle steering gear comprises a housing 3 of plastics material which houses co-operating metal rack and pinion components 7, 1 and precludes any direct metal to metal contact to transmit shock forces between output and input sides of the gear except for contact between drive transmitting components of the gear. A spring-pressed yoke 8 engages the back of the rack 7 and is located in a bore 3b which is closed by a plug 10. The end of a main chamber 3a is closed by a pressed metal cap 6 having a barbed outer surface which pierces the housing material. The housing may be injection moulded and may comprise glass fibre reinforcement. In a modification, the cap 6 and plug 10 are replaced by screw-threaded plugs of plastics material.
