A secure card property is also read by reader SCP and after modification in the cryptographic unit CU in accordance with random number look-up table LU1 is compared with a look-up table to determine if the card is a valid part of the system. The card may have other security features, Application 47616/71 being referred to in this respect. The card may also include a use delimiter number UD which is modified on each use of the card and carry information relating to a plurality of accounts from each of which the customer is entitled to draw money. To improve security the contents of the various look-up tables and decoding program of the PNG may be changed at any time by the bank by modifying the bank instruction code BSI and contents of the security module SM. A printer 19 may be provided to record details of the transactions or alternatively the dispenser may be on-line with a central computer for real time control.
