The compounds of Formulµ Ia and Ib, which are used as plant growth regulators, may be prepared by reacting a suitable thenyl halide with a phosphine PR 3 , and optionally replacing the halide ion of the resulting thenyl phosphonium halide by the required monovalent anion.
