method for preparation of a suspension of particles of a water soluble solids in an oily medium.and a method for preparation of axle grease that contains such a suspension.
A method of preparing a suspension of water-soluble solid particles in an oleaginous medium comprises emulsifying an aqueous solution of the solid with the oleaginous medium to form a water-in-oil emulsion which is thereafter dehydrated, the emulsification and dehydration both being carried out in the presence of a clay-type thickener (defined as a colloidal clay whose particles are coated with an oleophilic substance), e.g. montmorillonite coated with a quarternary ammonium salt. An activating agent for the clay may also be present, e.g. acetone. Water-soluble solids mentioned include alkali metal and ammonium nitrites, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulphites, borates, chlorates, perchlorates, hypochlorites, silicates, phosphates, salicylates, citrates, tannates, lactates, tartrates, oxalates, phthalates, acetates, iodates, arsenites, chromates, molybdates, and tungstates; amine nitrites, phosphates, and iodates, polycarboxylic acids; hydroxy fatty and polycarboxylic acids; amides; amino-acids and organic salts (e.g. sodium benzoate and calcium acetate). The oil may be a mineral oil (e.g. lubricating oil, residue, fuel oil or kerosine), a vegetable oil (e.g. castor oil) or a synthetic oil such as a diester or polyester, a polyglycol a polyether or a silicone. Specifications 778,822 and 902,623 are referred to.ALSO:A suspension of sodium nitrite particles in a commercial silicone lubricating oil is prepared by dissolving the sodium nitrite in water, forming a water-in-oil emulsion of this solution in the oil and dehydrating the emulsion so formed, the emulsification and dehydration between carried out in the presence of a claytype thickener known as "Baragel" and acetone, the latter of which evaporates during these processes. "Baragel" is a montmorillonite clay coated with a quaternary ammonium salt. Specifications 778,822 and 902,623 are referred to.ALSO:A method of preparing a suspension of water-soluble solid particles in an oleaginous medium comprises emulsifying an aqueous solution of the solid with the oleaginous medium to form a water-in-oil emulsion which is thereafter dehydrated, the emulsification and dehydration both being carried out in the presence of a clay-type thickener (defined as a colloiday clay coated with an oleophilic substance), e.g. montmorillonite coated with a quaternary ammonium salt. The dispersion so formed may be either mixed with a grease or thickened to grease consistency in known matter. In examples, dispersions of sodium nitrite in mineral lubricating oil are added to greases formed from mineral oil and either lithium 12-hydroxystearate or the calcium soap of hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids. Specifications 778,822 and 902,623 are referred to.
