Tetrabromophthalates of aluminium (see Specification 1,061,372), potassium, calcium, silver, tin and zinc are prepared by treating tetrabromophthalic anhydride with aqueous potassium hydroxide, separating the potassium tetrabromophthalate formed, and if necessary further treating it with the appropriate metal chloride or nitrate. Reference is also made to the cupric, nickelous, cerium, ferric, ferrous, mercuric, beryllium, yttrium, and indium tetrabromophthalates.ALSO:A flammable polymeric material is intimately admixed with a composition of two or more components that react under the conditions of combustion of the polymeric material to produce a flame retardant, one component being a metal salt of a halogen-containing carboxylic acid. Flammable polymeric materials exemplified are polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. The second component of the flame-retardant-producing composition may be a compound of arsenic, tin, titanium, boron, antimony or bismuth. The flame-retardant produced is thus an inorganic halide. In examples, polyethylene is milled with (i) antimony oxide and (ii) various metal tetrabromophthalates, aluminium tetrachloro- or tetraiodophthalate, aluminium triiodobenzoate, barium tetrabromobenzoate - o - sulphonate, or aluminium or lead eudo-1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachlorobicyclo (2.2.1) - 5 - heptone - 2,3 - dicarboxylate, together with other constituents, and polypropylene and polystyrene are mixed with antimony oxide and the aluminium dicarboxylate above.
