Processable polymethyl methacrylate - using initiator prepd by reacting alkyl lithium with diarylethylene

Polymethyl methacrylate with better processability i.e. which may be injection moulded is prepd. by polymsg. methyl methacrylate in the presence of an anionic initiator of formula I in an amt. of 1-100 m moles per mole methyl methacrylate: (where R is =6C hydrocarbyl; Me is an alkali (ne earth) metal; and Q1 and Q2 are each 6-8C aryl or aralkyl). The initiator is prepd. by reacting an alkali metal alkyl cpd. pref. n-butyl or sec. butyllithium with a cpd. of formula II, pref. 1,1-diphenylethylene or 1-phenyl-1-naphthylethylene: The polymethyl methacrylate has a mol. wt. of 15,000-75,000.
