New cpds. have formula where a, b, c and d are H, halogen, 1-6C alkoxy, phenoxy or (halogenated) 1-6C hydrocarbon gps., F is H, 1-6C alkyl or i-6C hydroxyalkyl, G is 2-6C hydroxyalkyl, R1 and R2 are H or 1-6C hydrocarbon gps., or together with the C atom form a 4-6C cyloalkylene or cycloalkenylene gp., the broken line indicates a double bond between C in the 3-position and C in the 2- or 4-position, and Y is H linked to the C in the 2- or 4-position which does not form part of the double bond. Intermediates of formula where Z is O or S and T is a (halogenated) 1-12C hydrocarbon gp. are also claimed. I are catalysts for prepn. of carbodiimides from isocyanates, have surfactant properties, can be used as flame-retarders in polymers, esp. polyesters, including coatings, can be used as flame-retardant comonomers for, e.g. ethylene and propylene, and can be used, alone or with other polyols, to prepare flame-resistant polyurethanes.
