Each locking device Fig. 2 comprises a pair of levers 7 pivoted to a mast section 5 immediately above a joint 6 and held in an inoperative position by a corrodable release member 8, e.g. of magnesium. When released the two levers which are of semi-circular section pivot down to encase the joint 6, and a locking ring 10 slides down the section 5 and over the two levers 7 which have conically flared ends to retain the ring 10. Each section 5 has an instrument package 14 e.g. for recording current, temperature, conductivity and sound velocity, the data being fed by an electric cable 3 to a marker buoy 4 containing recording equipment and a power supply (see Division G1).
