Optical brighteners for org. materials with the exception of textile fibres in the textile industry, pref. for brightening paper and also cellulose, polyamide and protein fibres in textiles outside textile industry, e.g. by incorporating to detergents and fabric softeners, have the general formula (I):- (where X is morpholino, 2,6-dimethylmorpholino, N-benzyl-N-hydroxy-lower-alkylamino, N-hydroxyethyl-N-lower-alkylamino, N-hydroxyalkyl-N-cyclohexylamino and Y is H or alkali- or alkaline earth metal cation or a quat. alkylammonium cation and Z and Z' each is H or 1-4C alkyl).
