Apparatus for the treatment, e.g. composting, of refuse, particularly household refue and sludge from effluent treatment plant, with feed and discharge equipment for the supply of the untreated and removal of the treated material, comprising (a) a rotatable support on which at least one treatment chamber for the reception of the refuse and sludge is mounted, (b) aerator devices connected to the treatment chamber for aerating the material to be treated, (c) discharge units so arranged that they carry the treated material away from the treatment chamber at a position remote from the feed point thereto, viewed in the direction of rotation of the support. In particular, a series of tretment chamber is provided one behind the other in the direction of rotation. A compact and relatively simple plant for composting household refuse is provided, designed to permit adequate aeration of the material so as to speed up the composting process.
