A process for the cyclotrimerization can of diolefins to cyclo dodecamethylene diamine trienes by means of triethylaluminum or diethylaluminum and titanium tetrachloride and aluminum halide catalysts produced in the presence of a verduennungsmittels and hydrolysis and separation of the reaction products
Diolefins are trimerized to cyclododecatrienes by means of an alkyl metal catalyst in the presence of a diluent which has been used previously in a similar trimerization, said diluent being contacted with 0.1-1% by weight of aluminium chloride by weight of the diluent prior to effecting the next trimerization. Diluents specified are benzene, alkyl benzenes, saturated hydrocarbons and chlorinated benzenes and alkyl benzenes. The catalyst may be an aluminium tri-ethyl/titanium chloride catalyst. Diolefins specified are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene and dimethyl butadiene. In examples, polybutadiene, vinyl cyclohexene, and cyclooctadiene are formed as by-products.
