Substituted 4,4 '- to - (4 - amino6 - sulfo anilino - s - triazine - 2 - ylamino) stilbene - 2,2' - disulfoverbindungen and their use as optical brighteners
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula FORM:1008457/C2/1 wherein M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, n represents 1 or 2, Y represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and Z represents a -CH2COOM or -CH2CH2SO3M group. They are preferably prepared by (1) condensing approximately 1 mole of 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid with approximately 2 moles of cyanuric chloride, (2) condensing the product so formed with 2 moles of an aniline mono- or di-sulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, and (3) condensing the product of step (2) with 2 moles of taurine, N-methyl-taurine, N-ethyl-taurine, glycine, N-methyl-glycine or N-ethyl glycine. Other preparations vary the order of condensation.ALSO:Compounds of the general formula FORM:1008457/D1-D2/1 wherein M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, n represents 1 or 2, 7 represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and Z represents a -CH2COOM or -CH2CH2SO3M group are employed as brightening agents with cationic surface active agents on cellulosic media, with alum and rosin size in paper making, and to yield brighter hues on cellulosic materials. In the Examples, a piece of cotton (100 g) was padded with an aqueous suspension containing 1.43 g of a cationic synthetic softening agent and 0.07 g of the compound of the formula FORM:1008457/D1-D2/2 dissolved in 100 mls of water and paper was prepared from a bleached sulphite paper pulp that had been located in turn with 100 cc of water, 10 cc of a solution of 0.2 g of the compound of the formula FORM:1008457/D1-D2/3 or the compound of the formula FORM:1008457/D1-D2/4 in 100 cc of water, 5 cc of rosin size and 5 cc of a 1.5% w/v alum solution.ALSO:Compounds of the general formula FORM:1008457/B1-B2/1 wherein M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal, n represents 1 or 2, Y represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and Z represents a -CH2COOM or -CH2.CH2.SO3M group, are employed as brightening agents with caseinclay coating on paper. In an example, a coating formulation consisting of 80 g. of clay, 20 g. of calcium carbonate, 66,3 c.c. of a casein solution prepared by mixing 166 g. of casein, 47,7 c.c. of concentrated ammonium hydroxide and 300 c.c. of water at 55-66 DEG C. and subsequently cooling and diluting the mixture with water to 1 1., and 4 g. of latex was diluted with water to 250 g. 1 g. of the compound of the formula FORM:1008457/B1-B2/2 was added and paper coated with the formulation thus obtained.
