An alloy consists of Sn 0.04-0.5%; Ga 0.005-1%; Al (at least 90%) the remainder, the Sn being in solid solution in the matrix to the maximum degree. The alloy may also contain 0.001-8% in total of one or more lattice expanders having a solid solubility in Al greater than 0.03. Examples of such expanders are Mg 0.001-7%; Zr 0.001-0.3%; Bi 0.001-0.5%; In 0.001-0.5%. The required micro-structure is achieved by homogenization at 550-630% for 15 minutes to 24 hours followed by quenching. The alloy may be used for the anode of a primary cell or a cathodic protection system.
