[Also in Division H1] A hollow waveguide or cavity resonator is made by joining together a number of parts, the mating surfaces being milled to optical smoothness and a diffusion weld being produced between them by compression and heating. The roughness of the surfaces should not exceed one micron. Copper parts may be joined by heating at temperatures between 475‹ and 1000‹ C. for times varying from a few minutes to one hour. A low pressure, e.g. 0À3 kg/cm.SP2/SP, may be applied or the weight of the parts themselves may be sufficient. The welding is effected in hydrogen.
