Phosphorus containing polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a tris-polypropylene glycol phosphite in which the majority of hydroxyl groups are secondary. Other polyols such as polyalkylene ether glycols, polyesters, alkylene glycols, di-and tri-alkylene glycols, thiodiglycol, glycerol, trimethylol-ethane and propane, the reaction products of alkylene oxides (e.g. propylene oxide) with polyols (e.g. glycerol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolphenol, diethanolamine, castor oil, blown linseed oil, blown tung oil, N,N,N1,N1-tetrakis (2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenedionise, sucrose, triethanolamine and a p-t-butylphenolform-aldehyde resin). The polyesters may be linear or branched. Several tris-polypropylene glycol phosphites of various molecular weights are specified. Many organic polyisocyanates are specified including prepolymers prepared by reacting an excess of an organic polyisocyanate with a polyol as above or with a tris-polypropylene glycol phosphite. Foams may be prepared by adding water or a fluorinated alkane blowing agent to the reaction mixture. Specification 942,776 is referred to.ALSO:Surface coatings are obtained by applying to wood, steel or glass (e.g. a petri dish) a dimethylformamide solution of a polyurethane obtained by reacting a trispolypropylene glycol phosphite, with or without a polyoxypropylated glycerol, as with toluene di-isocyanate.
