Compounds of the general formula FORM:1058047/C2/1 wherein each of R1 and R2 is individually a hydrogen atom or a C1- 6 alkyl group; R3 is NHCONH2, NHCSNH2, NHC(:NH)NH2, NHR4, NHCOOR5, NHCOR6, OR7 FORM:1058047/C2/2 wherein R4 is a C1- 6 alkyl, a phenyl, a benzyl or a C2- 4-hydroxyalkyl group; R5 is a C1- 4 alkyl, a C2- 4 hydroxyalkyl or a C2- 4 haloalkyl group. R6 is a C1- 6 alkyl or a phenyl group and R7 is H or a C1- 6 alkyl group, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula FORM:1058047/C2/3 with a compound H2NR3 or its acid addition salt. 2-Lower alkanoylquinoxaline-1,4-dioxides are prepared either by oxidation of the 2-lower alkylquinoxaline-1,4-dioxides or by oxidation of 2-(a -hydroxy lower alkyl) quinoxaline or from 2 - (a - bromo - lower alkyl) quinoxaline by reaction with dimethyl sulphoxide and oxidation of the 2-lower alkanoyl-quinoxaline. 2-(a -Hydroxy lower alkyl)quinoxaline-1,4-dioxides are prepared by reaction of 2-formyl-3-(lower alkyl) quinoxaline (by oxidation of 2-methyl-3-lower alkyl quinoxaline) with a Grignard reagent to give 2-(a -hydroxy lower alkyl) quinoxaline and forming the dioxide, or by oxidizing 2,3-di-lower alkyl quinoxaline to give 2,3-di-lower alkyl quinoxaline mono-N-oxide, reacting this with acetic anhydride to give 2-(a -acetoxy lower alkyl)-3-lower alkyl quinoxaline, oxidizing this to 2 - (a - acetoxy lower alkyl - 3 - lower alkyl quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide and hydrolyzing the ester group.ALSO:Animal foodstuffs contain compounds of the general formula FORM:1058047/A1-A3/1 wherein each of R1 and R2 is individually a hydrogen atom or a C1-6 alkyl group R3 is NH CONH2, NH CSNH2, NH C(NH)NH2, NHR4, NH COOR5, NH COR6, OR7 FORM:1058047/A1-A3/2 or FORM:1058047/A1-A3/3 wherein R4 is C1-6 alkyl, a phenyl, a benzyl, or a C2-4 hydroxy alkyl group; R5 is a C1-4 alkyl, a C2-4 hydroxy alkyl or a C2-4 halo alkyl group and R7 is H or C1-6 alkyl group. The compounds of the invention show growth promoting activity.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions contain compounds of the general formula: FORM:1058047/A5-A6/1 wherein each of R1 and R2 is individually a hydrogen atom or a G-6 alkyl group, R3 is NHCONH2, NHCSNH2, NHC(:NH)NH2, NHR4, NHCOOR5, NHCOR6 OR7 FORM:1058047/A5-A6/2 wherein R4 is a G-6 alkyl, a phenyl, a benzyl, or a C2-4 hydroxyalkyl group; R5 is a G-4 alkyl, a C2-4 hydroxy alkyl or a C2-4 halo alkyl group and R7 is H or G-6 alkyl group, together with a carrier and optionally with anti biotics. The compositions may be administered either orally or parenterally, the compositions for parenteral administration containing optionally in addition to liquid diluents, local anaesthetics and/or hyaluronidase to afford desirable pharmacutogical properties. The compositions are anti-in-fectives.
