1,184,586. Testing filamentary material. C.A. LITZLER. July 10, 1967 [July 28, 1966], No.31643/67. Heading G1S. A continuously supplied length of filamentary material is tested by forming a loop of the material which is tensioned by providing a speed differential between input and output elements feeding the loop, and measuring the tension in the loop and the extension due to the tension, from the speed differential; in addition, the input and output means may be clamped and the loop then tensioned by other means such as a hydraulic piston, while the resulting tension and strain are measured and recorded. As shown in Fig. 3 the filamentary material or cord 13 is threaded through an accumulator C, around capstans 23, 24 and dancer pulley 30 to form a loop and through a further pulley system to a wind-up mechanism E Fig. 3 (not shown). A constant tension is applied by the speed differential of capstans 23, 24, a strain guage being associated with pulley 30 to indicate the tension. The elongation caused by the tension is measured by sensing the speed differential of the capstans 23, 24, the ratio between these two speeds being manually controlled by a trimming vernier potentiometer. In addition a static test is effected at spaced time intervals, the cord being clamped by toggle clamps 38, 39 and the pulley 30 moved downwardly by a hydraulic piston 35. The tension in the loop is measured by the strain gauge or load cell mounted on the pulley 30 and the tension on the cord is recorded on a recorder 40. The toggle clamps are then released and the capstans 23, 24 rotated at higher speeds to take up slack in the accumulator C.
