Polyfluorinated sulphonyl fluorides and polyfluorinated sulphones are prepared by reacting an olefin of the formula or with SO 2 F 2 or a compound of the formula R(SO 2 F) p in the presence of fluoride ion in a polar organic aprotic solvent at 25-200‹C.; in the above formulµ A is fluorine or a perfluorohydrocarbon group which is unsubstituted or is substituted by a single substituent chosen from H, CH 3 and OCH 3 or by up to two halogen substituents other than fluorine provided that the number of such halogen atoms does not exceed the number of fluorine atoms, B is chlorine, fluorine or an unsubstituted or substituted perfluorohydrocarbon group as defined above, or A and B together form a perfluoroalkylene group, the total number of carbon atoms in A and B is from 0 to 8, n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 4, m is an integer from 1 to 6, R is an aliphatic mono- or di-radical containing 1-18 carbon atoms which is free from aliphatic unsaturation and is composed entirely of carbon and one or more of H, halogen, O and S, the O and S being present as ether, sulphone or sulphide, and p is 1 or 2. The invention also comprises perfluorosulphones of the formulµ and wherein ASP1/SP and BSP1/SP are fluorine or perfluoroalkyl, RSP1/SPt is C 1-18 perfluoralkyl, the total number of carbon atoms in each pair of groups ASP1/SP and BSP1/SP attached to the same carbon atom is 0-8, and t is an integer from 2-10. The sulphonyl fluorides may be hydrolysed with a base to form the corresponding sulphonic acid salt which may be subsequently converted to the free acid by treatment with a strong acid.
