1,214,839. Modifying polyamides. TEIJIN Ltd. 19 Dec., 1967 [20 Feb., 1967; 11 July, 1967], No.57664/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] A composition used in the treatment of synthetic fibrous materials comprises (a) a polyamide N-substituted by methylol or alkoxymethyl in which the amount of combined formaldehyde is 3-15% by weight, (b) a compound of the formula in which X is a phosphoric acid radical (i.e. Xis or silicic acid residue, i.e. X is and q is 0 or 1 and when q is 0, R is a residue of a compound having at least two groups selected from hydroxyl and primary or secondary amino, the residue being an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol residue, aliphatic hetero-cyclic polyhydric alcohol residue, a residue of one of these types in which one or more of the free hydroxyl groups is esterified with an aliphatic carboxylic acid, polyalkylene-polyamine residue or polyoxyalkylene-polyamine residue, l is 0 or 1, Z is oxygen or hydroxyl, n is 0 or 1, Y is hydrogen or methyl and m is the number of combined moles of alkylene oxide, m x p being 5-100 moles, with the proviso that when Z is OH, n and p are both 1 and l is 0, and when Z is -O-, l, p and n are all 1, and when q is 1, R is aliphatic alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, aliphatic alkoxy of 1-18 carbon atoms, aryl, alkyl-substituted aryl or aromatic alkoxy, l is 0, 1 or 2, Z is oxygen, n is 1, Y, m and m Î p have the meanings previously defined in the case when q is 0, and in the case where X is a phosphoric acid residue p = 3 - l and in the case where X is a silicic acid residue p = 4 - l, and (c) a catalyst which is an acid or acidforming substance, e.g. oxalic, maleic, citric, butyric, tartaric, boric, chloroacetic, malonic, or p-toluene sulphonic acid, or a volatile amine or ammonium salt thereof. The composition comprising (a), (b) and (c) may be applied to the fibrous material in the form of a watercontaining methanol solution or aqueous dispersion, and the impregnated fibres then squeezed, dried at 80-120‹ C. for several minutes and then heat-treated at 150-180‹ C. for from 30 seconds to 10 minutes to effect reaction on the material of (a) and (b) in the presence of (c).
