Cyanoethylated aliphatic ketones - from acrylonitrile and ketones in di-sec butyl ether and tertiary butanol

Title cpds. useful as starting material for prepn. of carboxylic acids, e.g. dicarboxylic acids useful as lacquer and plastic raw material, e.g. for polyester and polyamide prodn., and as modifiers or hardeners for epoxy resins and for esters suitable as placticisers, amines and lactones are prepd. by reacting, in alkaline medium, acrylonitrile with aliphatic ketones contg. at least one CH-acidic gp. in alpha-position to keto gp. takes place in 50-2000 g. per mole acrylonitrile of a di-sec.-butyl ether and tert.-butanol mixture in 1:9 to 9:1 wt. ratio, pref. for 1-30 hrs. with 10:1 to 1:3 ketone:acrylontrile mole ratio in presence of 0.0005 - 0.3 moles alkali hydroxide or alkali tert. butylate as catalyst at 0-120 degrees C. Prepn. of 2-mono-, 2,2-di- and 2,4-di-(beta-cyanoethyl)-pentanone-3 is claimed.
