Reactants are mixed in stoichiometric proportions, ground together and heated at 100-500 degrees C pref. 250-450 degrees C until anhydrous mass is formed. This is broken up added to water, stirred for 15 mins. and the resulting MgO/hydroxide filtered off, washed and dried. Filtration is rapid, no pH control or addition of coagulants being necessary. Yield of MgO is very easily quantitative. Sintered magnesite is formed by initially heating MgO/hydroxide at 800-1100 degrees C then briquetting and sintering in the normal way.
