The bucket is mounted on a first pivot at the bottom of a first lever arm itself mounted at the end of a tilting arm, with counterweight, at a second pivot the tilting arm pivoting about a third shaft, which can be moved up and down along a line parallel to the bars of the grating. Independent drives controlled by a separate programme unit are used to raise the whole unit so that the bucket scrapers over the surface of the grating, then swing the arms clear of the gulley finally advancing the bucket by swinging the lower arm forward over a conveyor so that by tilting the bucket the debris falls onto the conveyor.
